The Challenge

The challenge

Bringing two PGA Tour stars together on the golf course can only lead to one thing: competition. Even on a day off, where no prize money and no shiny trophy is at stake, guys like Erik van Rooyen and Doc Redman never lose that competitive edge. For them, golf truly is More Than A Game.

Going into the challenge, the duo are all square in the facial hair department - Doc, the 24-year-old American from Raleigh, North Carolina, is rocking a 'Magnum-style' moustache that seems pretty popular on tour these days. But with a full 'playoff beard' that could be straight out of the NHL post-season, Erik, from Bellville, South Africa, is no rookie in the beard game either.

Doc wins the first challenge by hitting his driver impressively close to the pin

Today, though, the points will be scored solely on on-course performance and it's Doc who wins the first challenge by hitting his driver impressively close to the pin on a short par-4 - demonstrating his cool demeanour and nerves of steel that saw him clinch the 2017 U.S. Amateur Championship. Back then, Doc sank 12 one-putts in a row and finished eagle-birdie in regulation to beat his opponent Doug Ghim to the title and record his greatest achievement on the golf course so far.

However, after Doc has drawn first blood in their challenge, it's Erik that shows why he already has four professional wins on his résumé and is comfortably placed inside the top-100 in the Golf World Rankings as the 31-year-old wins a closest to the pin challenge from a fairway bunker and a chip-off from a tricky lie in the rough.

Erik is very familiar with cricket but not baseball, two disciplines that are obviously very different beasts

Acknowledging that Erik might be tough to beat on the course today, Doc senses that maybe a change of ball size and a switch from club to bat might help him to turn this challenge around.
Born in South Africa, Erik is very familiar with cricket but not baseball, two disciplines that share some similarities but are obviously very different beasts. The change of scenery, from the golf course to the baseball diamond, seems to work for Doc as he transfers his silky smooth golf swing into a very impressive baseball swing, resulting in back-to-back homeruns to win the challenge.

At the end of the day, the standings are all square as both players drive home with big smiles on their faces (and a new-found appreciation for baseball!), ready to go head-to-head once again when their paths cross on the PGA Tour this season.
